FAQs

If you haven’t worked with wood before, it can be a little daunting attempting to figure out which interior wood paint to use. With so much choice, what do you need?

Here are the main types of interior wood paint, and some information on how they’re used.

Specialist Primer

When working with wood for the first time, it is best to use a specialist primer. Not only will it help create an all-important barrier to prevent bleeding, but it will allow your paint or opaque stain to cling on more easily. Unlike undercoats, specialist primers tend to be reserved for “problem” surfaces.

Undercoat

If you’re working on bare wood or wood which you have sanded, a good undercoat will be your best friend in helping you create a dependable layer. Don’t forget knotting solution if needed.

Matt

Now becoming more popular in homes and gardens across the UK, a matt wood paint (even the Rocktop Multi-Surface Clearcoat Matt) gives a clean finish with no gloss.

Eggshell

Typically reserved for furniture and cabinets, a quality eggshell wood paint will look great, as long as you have a coat of primer on the wood first.

Satin

Probably the most popular type of interior wood paint, Satin is a mid sheen finish which works best on skirting boards and trim.

Gloss

When you want to have wooden features and fittings stand out with a high sheen, gloss wood paint would be your go-to. Typically reserved for small areas, the likes of Dulux Once Gloss provides a no-fuss solution or if painting a larger surface with gloss

The best way to paint interior wood or paint over an existing stained wood, for example interior doors, is by following these simple steps:

  • Prepare the surface - start by thoroughly cleaning the wood, removing any dirt, dust or grease. If the wood has been varnished or painted, it is suggested you lightly sand it to create a smooth surface so the new paint adheres correctly.
  • Select the right paint, this should be suitable for interior wood surfaces.
  • Prime the wood - apply a coat of primer or undercoat before painting, this helps adhesion to the surface and can also help achieve a smoother finish.
  • Use appropriate brushes/rollers based on the interior wood you are painting
  • Apply thin coats and only reapply the next coat once the first coat is fully dry.
  • Paint in the direction of the wood.

A lot of customers ask us which paints are best to use when painting cabinets in the home. If you’re looking to breathe new life into kitchen cabinets, a satin , eggshell or even gloss if you require a high sheen finish wood paint would be a good option.

If you were looking to paint bathroom cabinets, you’d need to take a little more care. We recommend getting a high-gloss wood paint which won’t cause problems with all the moisture in the air.

For those who want maximum protection but don’t want a high-gloss, the likes of acrylic eggshell is your best option.

We can’t overstate the importance of getting surfaces fully prepped before applying paint or stain. Wood can be a tricky thing to work with, which is why you should get some primer & undercoat first. Some notable brands which do great primer for interior wood include Crown Trade, Zinsser, and Farrow & Ball.
