Johnstone's Trade Smooth Metal Paint is a primer and top coat in one. A solvent-based gloss finish, it can be applied directly to bare, previously painted or rusted surfaces. It offers up to 5 years of protection, longer than a regular maintenance cycle with other similar products on the market.

Rich in anti-corrosive properties whilst maintaining excellent adhesion attributes, the Johnstone's Trade Smooth Metal Paint doesn't require a primer as it can be applied onto corroded surfaces and provides good resistance to water, humidity, hot salt spray and UVA. Particularly suitable for renovation of corroded substrates after the manual removal of loose layers of rust, it can also be used on steel cast iron and other steel elements.

For best results, remove any flaking or peeling previous paint and remove as much rust as possible before applying 2 coats using a brush.

Hi, can you use Johnstone's Trade Smooth Metal paint on metal sheds?
Yes, you can use Johnstone's Trade Smooth Metal Paint on a metal shed. It will provide a gloss finish.
You say apply by brush , but can this product be sprayed ?
We don't recommend spraying Johnstone's Trade Smooth Metal Paint for health and safety reasons as it is solvent-based. We recommend applying using a brush for best results.
Will Johnstone's Trade Smooth Metal Paint set/dry okay in the winter cold months?
Yes, Johnstone's Trade Smooth Metal Paint will still set and dry in colder weather but it will take longer. We suggest that you allow for 4 hours instead of 2 hours before recoating.
Can you paint aluminium window frames with this?

Is it possible to thin this paint slightly?
Yes, The Johnstone's Trade Smooth Metal Paint can be thinned with white spirit. we do recommend that no more than 10% mix ratio.
How will I clean the brush after using Johnstone's Trade Smooth Metal Paint
To clean brushes after use we do recommend white spirit.
is this superior or inferior to hammerite for cast iron guttering on the water carrying side in terms of protection and ease of use?
Johnstones Smooth Metal paint is better in terms that it can be applied directly onto corrosive surfaces, whereas the Hammerite will require some preparation before use. However the Smooth Metal is thinned using White spirit and also has a slower drying time than Hammerite.
Can this paint be applied over other paint , my wrought iron fence has been painted before with smooth hammerite
Yes, you can apply the Johnstone's Smooth Metal, however we would advise sanding the area down and rinse thoroughly to provide a key before applying.
