FAQs
To paint wooden garden furniture, follow these steps:
-
Place your furniture on top of a large dust sheet, old newspapers or bedding to protect the floor.
-
Remove any damaged wood and fill any holes or cracks with exterior wood filler.Â
-
Wash your wood down with warm, soapy water and allow it to dry thoroughly.Â
-
Sand your furniture carefully, removing any flaking product, old paint drips or similar. Then, use a finer sandpaper such as 180-grit, paying close attention to crevices.Â
-
Remove leftover dust with a rag or dry cloth.
-
Apply an exterior primer and leave this to dry for around eight hours.Â
-
Using a small brush or roller, begin applying your paint in your chosen colour. Remember: when painting wood, several thin coats are better than one thick coat. Let the first coat dry fully before applying your next coat.
Most wooden garden furniture should be repainted or restained every 2–3 years, depending on the product used and the level of exposure to sun and rain. High-quality outdoor furniture paints and stains can last longer if applied correctly and maintained. To keep your furniture looking its best, check annually for signs of fading, flaking or water damage, and touch up or recoat as needed.
