Our Range of Paint for Summer Houses

Explore our diverse range of summer house paints to find the right solution for your project.

Choosing the right finish is just as important as choosing the right colour. Our collection features products with varying sheens, each offering distinct practical and aesthetic benefits. Here's what to expect from each option:

  • Matt: Products like Bedec Barn Paint Matt feature a flat, non-reflective finish. Matt works well if you want the colour to take centre stage without any shine or sheen, and it suits earthy tones and botanical shades particularly well.

  • Eggshell: This low-sheen finish sits between matt and satin. It’s a popular choice for summer houses with a period or cottage style. Little Greene Tom's Oil Eggshell is a premium oil-based formula from one of the UK's most respected designer paint brands.

  • Satin: The most popular finish for summer houses, satin offers a gentle sheen that's easy to wipe down and holds up well to moisture and the elements. Sadolin Superdec Opaque Wood Protection Satin is one of our best-selling options.

  • Semi-gloss: A step up from satin in durability and sheen, semi-gloss finishes are a smart choice for areas that experience more wear. This includes window and door frames, skirting and other external woodwork that need to withstand regular cleaning. Bedec MSP Multi Surface Paint Semi Gloss offers excellent coverage and a clean, lasting result.

  • Gloss: Offering the highest sheen in the range, gloss finishes are highly durable, moisture-resistant and easy to keep clean. It works particularly well on trims, windows and feature walls where you want a smooth, polished finish that makes a bold statement. Sadolin Superdec Opaque Wood Protection Gloss delivers trade-quality performance on exterior timber in a solid, long-lasting formula.

Our opaque summer house paints provide complete, solid colour coverage, concealing the wood grain beneath for a clean, painted look. They're ideal if you want to transform the colour of a garden building, refresh tired or weathered timber, or make a real statement in the garden.

The best opaque paints for exterior wood are microporous, meaning they allow internal moisture to escape from the timber, helping prevent rot, blistering and paint failure over time.

Some of our most popular opaque paints include:

  • Jotun Demidekk Cleantech: This premium exterior paint has self-cleaning properties that help your summer house shed dirt and grime between coats. Featuring weather-resistant pigments, it offers excellent protection against UV damage and yellowing.

  • Sadolin Superdec Opaque Wood Protection: This flexible, water-based finish is one of our best-selling summer house paints. It moves with the timber through the seasons, helping protect your garden house against moisture and UV damage for up to 10 years.

  • Osmo Country Shades: A collection of nature-inspired tinted colours designed to add personality to exterior wood. From earthy greens and sage tones to coastal blues and warm neutrals, Osmo Country Shades allow you to complement your garden's palette in a high-opacity, UV-resistant finish.

  • Zinsser Allcoat Exterior Matt Tinted: A versatile water-based exterior paint that works well on timber and a wide range of other surfaces. Touch-dry and ready to recoat in just an hour, it's a great choice if you're tackling a time-sensitive job. Zinsser Allcoat resists cracking, blistering, flaking and fungal growth, ensuring a long-lasting finish.

  • Johnstone's Trade Woodworks Opaque Wood Finish: A water-repellent opaque wood finish that protects against mould and fungal growth. This water-based formula is fast-drying and ideal for quick project turnarounds. The Woodworks range also includes a Quick Dry formula.

Our selection of summer house wood stains offers a translucent alternative to opaque paint. Instead of concealing the timber, they penetrate it. This enhances the natural beauty while sealing it against moisture, UV rays and rot.

A wood stain is the natural choice if you have a quality timber summer house and want to preserve and highlight its natural character.

Some of our most popular wood stains include:

  • Osmo Natural Oil Woodstain: A penetrating oil-based stain that feeds and protects exterior timber from within. Available in satin and matt finishes, this product is ideal for natural-look summer houses where the grain and texture of the wood are part of the appeal. It’s a firm favourite for Scandinavian-style garden buildings and log cabins.

  • Dulux Trade Ultimate Woodstain: A water-based translucent woodstain with built-in UV inhibitors to prevent solar rays from fading the colour over time. Available in ready-mixed and tinted shades, it's a trusted and practical choice for exterior timber on summer houses, sheds, fences, and garden furniture.

  • Gori 44+ Quick Dry Translucent Woodstain: This fast-drying formula is touch-dry in an hour. The mould and UV-resistant finish offers up to 4 years of protection and is available in a range of colours.

FAQs

The best summer house paint depends on the finish you're after and whether you want to preserve or conceal the timber's natural grain.

  • For solid colour coverage, a water-based opaque paint like Sadolin Superdec or Jotun Demidekk Cleantech is an excellent starting point. Both are flexible, microporous, and engineered specifically for exterior wood.

  • If you'd prefer a translucent finish that enhances the grain rather than covering it, a quality wood stain like Osmo Natural Oil Woodstain is a strong choice.

In either case, look for a product with UV protection, moisture resistance and good flexibility to handle the British climate.

As a rule of thumb, plan to repaint your summer house every three to five years. The exact timescale will depend on:

  • The quality of the paint used

  • How thoroughly the surface was prepared

  • How exposed your garden building is to wind, rain and direct sun

Always inspect the exterior each year for signs of flaking, fading or moisture ingress, and touch up as needed. We only supply high-performance trade products engineered to extend the time between repaints, giving you longer-lasting protection and a better return on the job.

It depends on the condition of the timber and the product you're applying.

  • Bare or new wood generally benefits from a primer or base coat to help improve adhesion and ensure an even finish.

  • If you're repainting over an existing coat that's in good condition, a light sanding and cleaning are usually sufficient.

  • Apply a primer if you're switching to a significantly lighter colour, or if the wood is particularly porous or dry.

Please note: Always check the manufacturer's guidance for the specific product and substrate you're working with.

Some of the best colours for a summer house are neutral tones like sage green, warm grey, cream and beige.

  • Neutral tones like sage green, warm grey and cream are consistently popular. They complement garden foliage and allow the plants around them to take centre stage.

  • Coastal blues and deep navies give garden buildings a relaxed, contemporary feel, while rich botanical greens like olive and forest green offer a classic, traditional look.

  • For something bolder, anthracite and charcoal grey deliver a modern aesthetic. Our in-house colour-matching service means you can match almost any shade from a paint card, a RAL code, or a physical swatch.

Both work well; the right choice depends on the look you want and the condition of your timber.

  • Opaque paints provide full colour coverage and are ideal for refreshing tired or weathered wood or achieving a bold, solid finish.

  • Wood stains are translucent and penetrate the wood rather than sit on the surface, making them a better fit when you want to enhance the natural grain rather than cover it.

Water-based paints and stains both allow the wood to breathe, helping to prevent moisture buildup and rot beneath the coating. This is an important consideration for exterior timber in the UK's climate.

Good preparation is the foundation of a long-lasting finish.

  1. Clean: Thoroughly wash the exterior with warm, soapy water and a soft-bristled brush to remove dirt, grime and any loose material before you do anything else.

  2. Sand: Once the surface is fully dry, sand down any rough areas and any flaking paint to create a smooth, even surface that new paint can adhere to properly.

  3. Mask: Apply masking tape around windows, door frames and any trim you want to keep clean. This saves time and gives you a much neater finish.

  4. Treat: Check for any signs of rot or mould and treat affected areas before painting. If algae or mould is present, apply a fungicidal wash and allow it to dry completely before proceeding.

  5. Check the forecast: Avoid painting in wet, cold or humid conditions. Ideal painting weather is dry, mild and overcast. A good weather window makes a real difference to how the paint cures and how long it lasts.

Yes, many of the exterior wood paints in our summer house range work just as well on garden sheds, log cabins, fences, and other timber garden buildings. Products like Sadolin Superdec, Jotun Demidekk Cleantech, and Osmo Natural Oil Woodstain are formulated to protect all types of exterior wood.
