Sadolin Superdec Opaque Wood Protection is a water-based, self-priming coating from Crown Paints. It is suitable for exterior woodwork and a wide range of other exterior surfaces, including new and previously painted or stained surfaces.

Please note: Sadolin Superdec is not suitable for horizontal decking, floors or substrates with water-repellent treatments.

Here's what sets Sadolin Superdec apart from standard exterior wood paint:

  • Self-priming and undercoating in one, removing the need for a separate primer at extra cost

  • Sadolin Superdec erodes naturally by weathering, helping resist cracking, peeling and flaking

  • Suitable for a wide range of exterior surfaces, including wood, weathered plastic, cladding, concrete, masonry and exterior doors and windows

  • Coverage of up to 10m² per litre on smooth-planed timber

  • Touch dry in 2-4 hours; recoatable after 16-24 hours

  • Covers timber blemishes and stained surfaces effectively, including a complete change of colour from dark to light shades

  • Available in hundreds of tinted colours, including a wide range of BS and RAL references through our colour matching service

Sadolin Superdec is available in three options. The formula is the same across the range; the differences lie in the finish and colour availability.

  • Sadolin Superdec Satin Opaque Tinted Colours is our most flexible option, with colour matching across 175 tinted shades plus BS and RAL references, so you can get virtually any colour you need. It's mixed to order, meaning it can't be returned or exchanged, so we'd recommend ordering sample pots first. Shades can come up lighter on the finished surface than they appear on screen.

  • Sadolin Superdec Satin Ready Mixed is the ideal choice if you're happy with one of the ready-mixed shades. This satin finish is available in a small selection of popular ready-mixed options, including black and anthracite.

  • Sadolin Superdec Gloss is well-suited to exterior joinery, doors and window frames where a higher sheen is preferred. This option offers the same durable protection with a gloss finish available in Black and White.

FAQs

Sadolin Superdec is suitable for use on:

  • Exterior wood, such as garden furniture

  • Cladding

  • Exterior doors and windows

  • Weathered plastic

  • Concrete

  • Masonry

For very resinous timber or coloured hardwoods, lightly sand the surface in the direction of the wood grain, then apply a blocking primer before painting for the best adhesion and colour results. Knotting agents should not be used with Sadolin opaque systems.

Please note: This product is not suitable for horizontal decking, floors or surfaces treated with water-repellent products.

Yes, Sadolin Superdec is self-priming and undercoating in one. For most suitably prepared exterior wood surfaces, there's no need for a separate primer.

However, when applying white or pale colours over bare timber or previously stained surfaces, a blocking primer is recommended to prevent extractive discolouration and to ensure the correct colour comes through clearly.

Follow these steps to achieve a clean, durable finish:

  1. Clean the surface: Wash down with warm water and a mild detergent. Rinse thoroughly with clean water and allow to dry completely.

  2. Check that the surface is dry: The timber must be fully dry before you start.

  3. Prepare bare timber: Lightly sand in the direction of the grain, then degrease the surface by wiping with a cloth dampened with methylated spirits. Allow the solvent to fully evaporate before painting.

  4. Treat new softwood first: New, non-preservative-treated softwood must be treated with a suitable wood preserver before applying Superdec. Apply two liberal coats, paying particular attention to end grains. Allow 24 hours between coats, and wait 24 hours after the final coat before applying Superdec.

  5. Apply in full, flowing coats: Use a good-quality paint brush designed for water-based products. Pay close attention to end grains, door tops and bottoms, and any exposed edges.

  6. Apply a minimum of two full coats: Allow 16-24 hours between each coat. One coat alone is not sufficient for a sound, durable finish.

For previously painted or stained surfaces in good condition, two full coats will achieve a durable result. Three coats are recommended for bare wood, heavily weathered surfaces, or where you're making a complete change of colour from dark to light.

The first coat typically absorbs more into the substrate than the second. Factor this in when calculating coverage per litre and ordering your tins.

Yes, Sadolin Superdec can be applied to new and previously painted or stained surfaces, provided the existing surface is sound and free of peeling or flaking.

Remove any loose material, lightly abrade the surface, and ensure it's clean and dry before starting. For a complete change of colour, particularly from dark to pale, a blocking primer will help prevent the old colour from showing through.
