Zero VOC and Low VOC Paint
Shop our wide range of low and zero-VOC paints at The Paint Shed. These paints are typically water-based, eco-friendly alternatives to traditional oil based paints. Our water-based paints and primers use advanced formulas to ensure the lowest VOC content possible.
We stock low- and no-VOC paint from leading designer paint brands, including Little Greene, Farrow & Ball and Craig & Rose. We also offer trade paint from trusted manufacturers like Crown Trade and Tikkurila.
Low-VOC content and VOC-free paints are environmentally friendly alternatives to traditional solvent-based paints. These paints are designed to reduce the emission of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) - chemical substances that easily become vapours or gases. Â
Low-VOC paints contain significantly reduced levels of these compounds (typically under 50 grams per litre for flat finishes). VOC-free paints contain virtually no detectable volatile organic compounds, usually less than 5 grams per litre. These paints use water as a primary solvent instead of petroleum-based chemicals and are often made with non-toxic binders and additives.
Why Are High-VOC Paints Harmful?
VOC paints have volatile organic compounds that vaporise at room temperature. Once vaporised, the paint off-gasses, releases chemicals into the air. According to a recent study, high VOC levels may contribute to air pollution and global warming.Â
Toxins from standard paint products, like formaldehyde and benzyne, create smog and worsen the climate crisis. WHO reported that volatile organic compound paints can cause adverse health effects, such as allergies, by worsening indoor air quality. These harmful fumes may also cause headaches, respiratory irritation, and nausea, meaning it is not suited to child-friendly spaces.
With natural ingredients, low toxicity and little to no odour, paints with lower levels of volatile organic compounds are better for the environment and home air quality. We stock low-VOC oil and water-based paints and varnishes in a range of colours and finishes.Â

Flat and matt paints with fewer than 50 grams of VOCs per litre are low VOC. Non-flat paints, such as satin, that have 100 grams of VOCs per litre are considered low VOC products.Â
Products with fewer than 5 grams per litre are considered zero-VOC paints. Different brands use different processes to manufacture paint, and so have varying levels of VOCs.
Unlike traditional paints, low VOC paints don’t have wet edges. Wet edges slow initial drying periods, allowing a longer period to work with the product. Low VOC paints allow less time to flow, which can sometimes result in rough surfaces. For best results, you may have to tailor your application method.
