What is Decking Stain?Â
Decking stain is a wood treatment designed to protect and colour outdoor timber surfaces. Unlike decking paint, which fully coats the surface, or decking oil, which nourishes the wood from within, decking stains are primarily categorised by their opacity.Â

Most decking stains provide a combination of UV protection, weather resistance and mould and algae inhibitors to protect the timber from the elements. As a general guide, coverage is typically 10-12 sq m per litre, though this varies by product and timber type.

We stock decking stains in opaque, translucent and specialist wet-wood formulas. These stains are suitable for most exterior timber, including decking, balustrades, garden furniture, fencing and outbuildings.
Opaque decking stains deliver a solid, high-coverage finish that fully conceals the wood grain. They're ideal when you want a complete colour change, when existing timber has become heavily weathered or uneven, or when maximum UV and weather protection is the priority. Heavily waterproof formulas are also worth considering for decks in particularly exposed areas or those facing heavy rainfall year-round.

Sadolin Beautiflex Opaque Woodstain is available in ready-mixed shades or colour-matched to order. Offering up to 7 years of protection, this stain delivers high opacity and strong colour retention, making it a great choice for a complete colour change.Â

Jotun Demidekk Decking and Garden Stain is a low-odour, water-based Scandinavian product available in a wide range of tinted colours. It can withstand algae growth, UV exposure and water damage for up to 3 years.
Translucent decking stains add colour and protection while allowing the natural wood grain to show through. They're typically oil-based, penetrating deep into the timber to provide UV protection, water resistance, and protection against mould and algae growth without forming a surface film.Â

Osmo Natural Oil Woodstain is a fast-drying formula available in both satin and matt finishes. It creates a microporous surface that allows the wood to breathe and reduces swelling and shrinkage.Â

Tikkurila Valtti Color is a flat matt, solvent-based stain that is well-suited to dense, oily timbers. It offers excellent penetration properties and protection from moisture, UV and mould and fungal growth.
Wet wood decking stains are formulated to adhere to damp or recently washed timber. This removes the need to wait for dry conditions after rain or jet washing, making it a practical choice for unpredictable British weather.

Sadolin Wet Wood Decking Stain can be applied immediately after the deck is washed down. It offers the same core protection as standard decking stains without the prep wait. Apply 2–3 liberal coats using a good-quality synthetic-fibre bristle brush, working wet-on-wet until the grain refuses to absorb any more.

Decking Stain FAQs
Good preparation is key to a professional result. Rushing the early steps is the most common reason for a patchy or short-lived finish.

Prepare and clean the surface. Remove furniture and plants, sweep away debris and dust, and hose down thoroughly. Use a specialist decking cleaner to tackle ingrained dirt, mould and algae. Leave the cleaner to work for up to 48 hours, then rinse and brush off.

Allow the timber to dry completely. Applying stain to damp wood leads to poor adhesion and a finish that won't last. Wait until the timber is fully dry, at least a few days after washing down.

Sand if needed. If the surface is rough or has remnants of an old stain, lightly sand it back to create a smooth, even base for the new coat.

Choose the right stain. Consider your desired finish, timber type, and whether the wood is new or weathered. New softwoods may need time to weather first. Always check the product instructions.

Apply in thin, even coats. Work in sections in the direction of the grain using a good-quality brush. Avoid direct sunlight, which causes the stain to dry too quickly and leads to lap marks.

Wipe off any excess before it dries to prevent sticky patches and ensure an even finish.

Allow to dry fully between coats. Most decking stains are touch-dry in about four hours, though recoat times vary by product; always check the tin. Apply 2–3 coats for best protection, then apply further coats as required.
It's worth doing a small patch test first, particularly if you're switching colours or applying over an old stain.Â

For decking with an existing stain or paint finish, proper preparation involves cleaning, drying and stripping any old, peeling finishes before restaining. Sand back any rough or raised grain to create a smooth, even surface. Use a decking cleaner to ensure a clear surface, then let the timber dry completely before applying your chosen stain.
Opaque stains give you a solid, full-coverage colour that hides the wood grain completely. It's great if you want to cover up tired or weathered timber or go for a bold, clean look.
Translucent stains let the grain show through, delivering bold colour and protection without concealing the timber's natural character. Oil-based penetrating stains in this category wear away gradually without peeling, making recoating straightforward.
As a general rule, decking should be treated every 18 to 24 months to help maintain its appearance and protection. The frequency depends on your timber type, exposure to weather conditions, and the level of footfall.
Some products, like Jotun Demidekk, can last up to three years per coat when applied correctly. Annual cleaning and maintenance will help you spot when a fresh coat is due.
Neither is universally better; the right choice depends on your timber type, the finish you're after, and your project’s working conditions.

Oil-based decking stains penetrate deeper into wood fibres, making them well-suited to dense, oily timbers like teak or hardwood decking where surface adhesion can be tricky. They tend to offer excellent long-term durability and wear away gradually without peeling. The trade-off is a longer drying time and more involved clean-up.

Water-based stains dry faster, are easier to clean with soap and water, and are often low-odour and non-toxic once dry. This makes them a practical choice for gardens with plants and animals. They work well on softwoods and pressure-treated timber and are a good option when you need to get the deck back in use quickly.
For most exposed UK decking, an oil-based formula will offer the most durable long-term protection.
