What is Decking Oil?Â
Decking oil is a penetrating wood treatment that protects and nourishes timber from the inside out. Unlike varnish or paint, which sit on the surface, decking oil soaks deep into the wood's pores to create a hydrophobic barrier that helps protect against rot and decay.

They're typically formulated as translucent, satin-finish oils that allow the wood's character to show through while still providing UV protection, water resistance and weatherproofing. Anti-slip decking oils are designed for surfaces where safety is a priority. They work by incorporating a non-slip additive into the coating, reducing the risk of slips on wet decking once fully dry.
Most products are applied as a clear top coat over a base or coloured oil, making them a practical finishing layer for high-traffic areas, stairs and handrails. They also typically offer protection against mould, algae, and fungal attack, all of which may contribute to a slippery surface.
Osmo Anti-Slip Decking Oil uses a highly compressed, organic non-slip additive to create a microporous surface that lets the wood breathe. It is suitable for smooth, ribbed and grooved decking surfaces and doesn’t require any sanding before application.

Sadolin Decking Oil 2 in 1 nourishes and protects in a single application. It offers excellent protection against UV damage while helping resist mould and algae growth.
Fast-drying decking oils are the practical choice when you’re short on time or working in unpredictable weather conditions. Often featuring a water-based formula, these products tend to be low-odour and low-VOC, making them suitable for use in gardens with plants and pets.

Decking Oil FAQs
For the best results when oiling your decking, follow these steps:

Prepare the decking. Clear any furniture, plants, etc. Sweep the surface and hose away any dirt, dust or mould. Use a specialist Decking Cleaner for best results.

Select the right decking oil to achieve your desired result.Â

Ensure your decking is fully dry before starting to oil it.

Work in sections, avoiding lap marks to ensure an even finish.Â

Wipe off any excess oil using a clean cloth or brush to minimise the oil drying unevenly or forming in sticky sections.

Allow to dry and reapply 2–3 coats, depending on your desired result.
For best results, apply your decking oil in thin, even coats in dry, overcast weather. Avoid working in direct sunlight or high temperatures.
The time needed for decking oil to dry can vary by brand and product; always refer to the tin to ensure optimal results.

Gori 05 Express Decking Oil is one of the fastest-drying options available and is ready for a second coat in just 1 hour.
In general, you should wait 24 to 48 hours before walking on the deck after the final application. Always check the specific drying times on the tin.
As a general rule, oil your decking every 1–2 years to maintain its appearance and protect it from the elements. The frequency will vary depending on your decking's exposure to weather conditions and foot traffic.Â
High-traffic areas or decks in exposed, wet climates may benefit from annual treatment, while sheltered timber in good condition may only need attention every 2–3 years. Annual cleaning and maintenance will help you spot when the wood is ready for a fresh coat.
