The Paint Shed recommends

A breathable, UV resistant finish ideal for exterior wooden doors, fences and summer houses.

Osmo UV Protection Oil Extra is a clear satin wood finish based on natural oil for wood in outdoor areas including doors, windows, window shutters, carports, timber cladding, balconies, fences, pergolas, summer houses and bamboo poles (e.g. in screens). Rich in active ingredients to protect the coating against mould, algae and fungal attack, the Extra range offers additional protection in comparison to the regular UV Protection Oil.

This UV protecting wood oil works by creating a microporous surface allowing the wood to breathe and reduce swelling and shrinkage. Water-repellent, it will not crack, peel or flake either.

Used as a top coat on already colour treated wood, Clear 420 Osmo UV-Protection-Oil reduces the time to reapply significantly. It blocks the greying process with a UV protection factor 12 in comparison to untreated wood when two coats are applied.

We recommend a coloured base coat first such as the Osmo Natural Oil Woodstain or Osmo Country Colour.

Preparation and Application of Osmo 420 UV Protection Oil Extra

For best results we recommend that the wood surface is be clean, dry and frost-free (moisture content max. 20%). Osmo UV-Protection-Oil is ready to use, there is no need to thin, simply stir well with a flat stirring stick or a spatula. Clean any old stains off and remove any previous paint coatings before applying Osmo UV Protection Oil and if renovating an existing wood surface, we suggest that you degrey any already greyed areas with Osmo Wood Reviver Power Gel before applying.

Where you are building something like a summer house, we suggest that where possible, you apply the first coat to all sides before building. Fresh wood containing natural wood extractives and especially hard woods, needs to weather off (for approximately 6 weeks) after building. By this point the wood becomes absorbent and the wood finish adheres optimally.

For ease of application, we recommend that you apply with the Osmo Flat Brush or Microfibre Roller, applying thinly along the wood grain and spreading well. Allow to dry for approx. 12 hours under good ventilation. Then apply the second coat. When recoating colour treated surfaces, or for renovation works, one coat applied to the clean and dry surface is usually sufficient.

Customer Questions
Coverage in M2 per Litre for single coat for the Osmo UV Protection Oil Extra Clear Satin?
Coverage of Osmo UV Protection Extra Clear Satin is 18m²/L with one coat.
Is this product suitable for internal stairs made of ash ?

We wouldn't recommend this for interior stairs, instead try Osmo Polyx Oil which is designed for use on interior floors.

Which paint is best for restoring the colour to rattan furniture?
Osmo UV Protection Oil Extra Clear Satin can be used on rattan furniture but will leave a very slight yellow tinge. We recommend applying to a small area first to test.
Is Osmo UV Protection Oil suitable for pressure-treated shiplap?
Yes, Osmo UV Protection Oil can be used on pressure treated shiplap.
Is Osmo UV Protection Oil ok for a wooden garden furniture?
Yes, Osmo UV Protection Oil is suitable for garden furniture.
Is Osmo UV Protection Oil Extra Clear Satin suitable for larch wood?
Yes, Osmo UV Protection Oil Extra Clear Satin is suitable for larch wood.
I have oak doors on my garage, which I have stripped down to the bare wood. The wood is in good condition, not needing any colouring. Is Osmo UV oil suitable for this purpose, or is there another that I should use?
Osmo UV Protection Oil Extra Clear Satin is perfect for oak garage doors.
I have used Sadolin Extra Durable Clearcoat on the windows and porch of my house in Aberdeenshire for years but it flakes off very quickly, in less than a year on the South facing windows, despite stating that it is uv resistant. Temperatures get down to -20°C during the winter. Would Osmo UV Protection Oil be a better bet and can it be used on top of the Sadolin Clearcoat after rubbing it down? If not, can you suggest another clear protector of better quality than the Sadolin which I could use?

To give advice in this scenario we'd need a little more information, please call us on 033 3320 2369 where our team of experts can advise in more detail.

The issues outlined could be a couple of things, if the coating is brittle and flaking off, it's a result of UV rays but if it isn't brittle and it's lifting off the wood, it would suggest the wood wasn't fully dry when applying and the moisture in the wood is forcing its way out.

Osmo Protection Oil would be a suitable product for exterior windows and joinery but only if the Sadolin is sanded back and the wood is fully dry.

Hello. I recently bought the Osmo UV Protection Oil Extra Clear Satin 420 in 3 L size (20% extra free) from you (and it was only £71!). This had the 'Extra' (white letters on red background symbol) on it, as shown on your 750 mL tin. But this is not shown on the picture of the 2.5 L tin. What does the 'Extra' symbol mean, and is the 3 L tin without that symbol the same thing? I want it to match the previous tin, as I'm only half way through the job! Thank you.
The 'Extra' symbol on the product means that it is furnished with active ingredients to protect the coating against mould, algae and fungal attacks. The 3L promotional tin that you mention here includes the 'Extra' benefits.
Can you use Osmo UV Protection Oil 420 Extra on top of Osmo WR Base Coat ?
The Osmo UV Protection Oil Extra Clear Satin is a stand alone product and does not require a base coat.
Will allow air dried oak to continue to dry
No, THe surface has to be fully dried before application.
