Previously Painted Timber - Remove all previous coatings, chipping off any loose or defective paint. Strip back to bare wood if necessary, be mindful that older surfaces may contain lead, so be careful to take the necessary precautions.

Old Timber - Use a suitable mould and algae cleaner to remove all cases of mould, algae, moss or mildew. Remove previous glazing and repair or replace any rotted wood, the surface needs to be as clean and sound as possible. Lastly, rub down and sand the surface, removing any traces of sanding dust and weathered wood. If the wood is still discoloured due to sun damage, opt for a wood reviver or restorer before applying a stain.

New Timber - Before painting prime the bare wood with two coats of a suitable basecoat, remove any excess with a lint free cloth as you go. Fill any holes, dents or defects with an exterior wood filler.

This stand out solvent based solution is dry in 4-6 hours and recoatable in 16 hours, it just one weekend you can protect your exterior doors, windows and joinery. If you are not sure how much paint you will need, you can use our handy paint calculator. Simply enter the dimensions of the surface you are painting and we’ll work it out for you. The average coverage for this product is up to 20m² per litre, but remember it’s always better to purchase more paint than you will need to have some leftover for touch ups and repurchasing.

Dulux Trade Weathershield Ultimate Opaque is a ‘ready to use’ exterior coating, it does not require thinning. A primer or basecoat may be required depending on the surface condition and whether the wood is bare. For best results apply on to a clean, dry and sound surface. Be sure to stir thoroughly before use then apply 2-3 coats for a professional finish.

Customer Questions
1. can this be used over existing water based paint without sanding to bare wood? 2. do brushes need to be cleaned with thinners?

We recommend that you lightly sand the surface to create a good key for the paint. If the existing paint is sound, no primer is required. When cleaning your brushes, we suggest turps or white spirits.
