Anti mould primer paints, their benefits and when to use them

What are anti mould primers and paints?

Anti mould primer paints are paints that contain biocides or active ingredients to protect surfaces against fungal degradation and high levels of moisture.

Typically, anti mould primer paints are used on walls and ceilings in bathrooms and kitchens where there are high levels of moisture or in areas prone to condensation. They are also useful in areas where there is moisture but not enough ventilation to deal with it.

What are the benefits of anti mould primer paints?

  • Rich in biocides that prevent and protect against mould and mildew
  • Designed for use in high moisture areas like kitchens and bathrooms
  • Resistant to condensation
  • Can be washed and wiped regularly thanks to their durable formula
  • Most are water-based which means low in VOCs and low odour
  • Often self-priming which means no need for a separate priming product
  • Fight fungal degradation

What is the best anti mould paint primer?

Zinsser Cover Stain Primer is a great stain-blocking primer that will cover unsightly mould and mildew stains with ease. It's a fast drying primer that can be applied to a clean, dry surface to permanently seal the surface and block any stains from grinning through. A multi-surface primer, it can be applied to walls, ceilings, metal, plastic and wood before applying a top coat.

What is the best anti mould paint?

Zinsser Interior Perma White is a high-performing anti mould paint that resists cracking, peeling and blistering for up to 7 years in high-moisture areas. It offers excellent adhesion to interior walls and ceilings, even over glossy paints, and can be used to seal flat paint, cement block, concrete and new drywall. A great all-rounder, it is a popular choice with trade and DIY decorators thanks to its superior formula. The only drawback of Zinsser Interior Perma White is that it can’t be tinted into colours, it’s a classic bright white only but it does come in a satin or matt finish.

If you’re looking for a coloured paint that fights mould we recommend Crown Clean Extreme Mould Inhibiting Matt Emulsion. It has been formulated using advanced slow-release technology of its extreme fungicidal barrier defence and superior stain resistance, making it a low-maintenance paint ideal for high-maintenance areas. The drawback to this anti mould paint is that it can’t be applied to woodwork such as skirting boards and trim, instead for these surfaces, we suggest Zinsser Allcoat.

Zinsser Allcoat is a mould-resistant paint that can be applied to wood, walls, ceilings, metal and plastics including UPVC. It's highly durable thanks to its breathable, water-shedding coating rich in biocides to protect against fungal degradation with an expected life span of up to 15 years. Although Zinsser Allcoat is an exterior paint, it can be used indoors too so is great for when you're looking for a coloured anti mould paint.
