How to protect carpets when painting skirting boards
Starting an interior painting project is a big decision, which is why proper preparation is so important. When painting spaces like a living room or bedroom skirting boards and walls, it’s crucial to protect your carpeted areas. Replacing carpet due to paint spills can be costly—but easily avoided. Follow these simple tips from our painting experts to keep your carpets safe and your project stress-free.
Our recommendations on how to protect your carpet when painting
Decorators tip - Use a clean scraper to gently tuck the carpet underneath the bottom edge of the skirting board. This helps push the carpet pile down and away from the skirting, reducing the risk of getting paint on the edges while you work.
Apply a 50mm masking tape with a slight lip along the edge of the skirting board. Then, use your paint scraper to press it firmly down—this creates a tight seal that helps prevent paint from seeping onto the carpet.
Lay down a roll of carpet protector before you start painting. It provides a durable barrier that shields your carpet from accidental drips and spills.
Drape polythene dust sheets over carpeted areas and secure them in place with masking tape. This adds an extra layer of protection against paint splashes and spills.
If you’re unsure about any part of the job, consider hiring a professional decorator. It can save time, stress, and help avoid costly mistakes—especially when it comes to protecting your carpets.

What if you accidentally spill paint?
If you have properly protected your carpet, you shouldn’t need to worry about paint spilling on surfaces you care about. However if paint does make its way onto your carpet, do not panic. The sooner you act the better, spilled paint is much easier to manage before it has the chance to set in and dry.Â
Water-based paint
Thankfully water-based paints are easier to clean however they do spread quickly so speed is key. Combine water and household vinegar in small doses and be sure to rinse the area with fresh water when you’re finished.Try not to rub the paint as this can spread the spillage. If it’s tiny amount, a splash from a roller for example that you don’t notice until it’s dry, it’s best to carefully cut the dried paint off the carpet but this is only applicable where the stain is a tiny spot or splash.
Oil-based paint
Oil paint stains are difficult to rectify, and typically require the application of alcohol or white spirits. Once the paint has been removed, rinse away chemicals once you are finished.Â
